Backache: What Exercises Work

Suffer Back Pain No More -- This Book is A Must Have !!
I consider myself a quasi back pain expert. I had two herinated discs removed 10 years ago and believed that would be the end of my trouble; it was only the beginning. I have have 4 MRIs, five physical thearpy experiences, have seen othropedic surgeons, neurolists, and a pain specialist for cortezone shots. I currently have another herinated disc and a miscellaneous bulge at the site of the prior two surgeries. This book have provided me more knowledge of how to solve my problems than all the rest combined -- however, having all that experience makes me confident this book has the solution. Many of the exercises I was familar with from physical thearpy over the years. And yes, they told me I'd likely have to do exercises for the rest of my life. And that's what makes this book so handy, you don't have a thearpist with you day in and out, this book is very specific on how to do the exercises, how to progress, and what not to do. The advice is practical and well researched, and very much consistent with everything all the specialists have told me during my decade and a half of back problems. And now the REALLY GOOD News. I noticed improvement within a couple of days of starting the exercises. I have found I have to exercise both morning and night, but I am virtually pain free. I was at a point when I purchased this book, that I woke up every morning with some pain and much activity-limiting stiffness -- and periodically my back would "go out" and I'd spend a couple days in bed recuperating. Now I wake pain free; am able to start my day immediately. I remain careful about how I treat my back throughout the day, but I'm very confident my bed rest days are behind me! And I'm more limber, my balance has improved, as has my flexibility. I recommed this book highly!! The section on how to "find time" was very much appreciated and accurate, there are numerous opportunties throughout the day to do many of the exercises. Do heed what the authors say: PAIN is NO GAIN -- so start slow, be gentle, and don't push, this is not a race, for me - it was about getting my life back. Good luck to all, I can't tell you how thankful I am I found this book, I hope it brings you the same kind of improvement it did me.

No nonsense approach for back pain relief
I have struggled for years with acute back pain. Reading Sobel & Klein's book gave me the answers I was looking for. After getting X-Rays and an MRI revealing that 4 of my discs were herniated from one degree to another. I made an appointment with a trained physical therapist and we set to work on a plan of stretching & strengthening the key muscles. Bingo! I have never felt better. M.D., Mary Pullig Schatz's "Back Care Basics" is excellent as well with an emphasis on Yoga the mental approach for successful rehabilitation.

Fellow author, pain-doc recommends this book!!
I have recommend these exercises to patients, but more importantly, they can benefit anyone who doesn't want to develop back pain in the future. Unfortunately our medical model is one of treatment and not prevention. I agree with another reviewer that consultation with a qualified physician is recommended for any type of chronic severe back pain, but there are very few cases I have seen, including patients who have failed surgical treatment, who have not been helped by some way in using moderate regular exercise. These are great exercises to reverse the effects that our sedentary working society foists upon us. I recommend this book strongly but emphasize the importance of dispensing with the "pain-gain" concept and embracing the a-little-bit-every-day-in-a-consistent-manner-without-pushing-to-discomfort paradigm. Kudos to Dava Sobel and colleagues for an excellent write...May I recommend "The Care and Feeding of Your Brain" as a companion book for helping deal the distress, depression, and other cerebral manifestations that accompany chronic pain...All the best!! Some wrong info,, LOTS of good pics, and LOTS of good facts
This book has alots of cute pics but also quite a few bloopers-the author doesn't even mention Leslie Carter in Nick's sibligns she just puts Aaron,Angel and BJ but not Leslie but other than that it's a great book for scrapbook wanters, bt some of the info you can find on the net for free and some new info. Also, it's from 1999 so some of the info is out-dated.

Good BSB book
This is a good book and it has good info, some of which I didn't know before, but I think it needed more good pictures. There are some cool pics, but also some dumb ones, so I gave it 4 instead of 5. It has a pic of BSB holding tennis raquets in front of their faces. WHY? I dunno. I guess it's supposed to be funny. Still, I think that any BSB fan would enjoy this. Most likely their official book is better. Maybe you should take a look at that first.

BSB FOREVER!
This book is great for all BSB fans! It is filled with tons of info about all the guys! It even has a story about when Kev. and Brian were litte! If any one wants to know about Brian's girlfriend this is a great book to get because it has some info on her as well! Well anywayz I as a huge BSB fan think that you should get this book if you are a true fan!

tasty combinations, wonderful pictures and yes you can convert to low calorie desserts espectially weight watchers style. All you need do is exchange lite cool whip for heavy cream, and in some pies use the pre made low fat crust in the stores.

Beautiful Cookbook!
I collect cookbooks and this is one of the best! It's easy to follow and the "no-bake" recipes are just outstanding. I truly love the photography in this book (by Duane Winfield--an obvious talent). The strawberry cheese cake pie on page 36 is-to-die-for and so simple! My pie almost looked as good as Mr. Winfield's picture!

Of course Ty and Amy have their romantic moments and Ty too seems to be troubled by something... Basically everyone has their own problems to deal with in this story. But whatever happened to Matt? Ever since he's been going out with Ashley, he's been disappearing. And what about daybreak and melody?!?!

The best books of the world!
Hi!I'm from German and I'm twelve,my English isn't very good, but I hope you can read my sentences! Here in German is only book eight the end, now! But book nine and ten must coming!I love these books, and I can't stop read, when I've got the ones side read!I think, these books are so real!Amy is a girl, she understand the horses and the peopels!I don't think what going on in book nine and ten,but I'm happy when they give here in German, because,I love Lauren Brooke, and Heartland!

Heartland 10, Tomorrow's Promise
I thoroughly enjoyed this book as well as the others so far in this series. These books are more realistic than most that I've read. I love how Lauren Brooke is able to portray her characters and describe their emotions so well. I can't tell you which book of the series is my favorite...too many to choose. I like this one a lot because Amy has so many things to do and is struggling to get everything (and more) done. Ty knows something has to give but doesn't want to tell her. I liked how most everything ended. I think several of the things that happened in this book are foreshadowing the next one. It will be interesting to see.

A Vile Justice
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Avon (05 October, 1999)
Author: Lauren Haney
Average review score:

Serving the Lady Maat can be dangerous.
Lt. Bak of the Medjay police has been sent to Abu to investigate a series of murders, spaced ten days apart, each victim higher in importance than the last. Now Bak must discover the slayer before Abu governor Djehuty becomes the next victim. In a strange land, filled with fiercely held secrets, Bak must find the slayer without himself becoming a victim.

Reading a Lt. Bak mystery is a journey through time. You walk beside an intelligent, interesting servant of the Lady Maat, dispenser of justice, experiencing the sights, sounds and smells of Ancient Egypt, brought to life through Haney's excellent use of language. I may have realized who the slayer was long before Bak, but it didn't detract from the wonderful story.

Historical mystery of the highest caliber
With each book in this series, I have become enamored of Lauren Haney's skill at creating some very memorable settings in Ancient Egypt. Each book reveals new facets of daily life in the world of Lieutenant Bak, the Medjay police officer who is the central character of this series. As a faithful servant of Lady Maat, the goddess who is the dispenser of justice, Bak works with his colorful staff to solve riddles that are totally convincing.

Articulate, entertaining, and highly recommended.

Lauren Haney brings life to Ancient Egypt
I just bought the 4th book in Lauren Haney's series because I absolutely loved the first three! This one has an interesting twist that keeps you guessing to the very end! They are intelligent, full of life, and make me feel as if I'm right there following Bak on all his Ancient police investigations!

I've read several Elizabeth Peters books and they are good, but I enjoy these even more!

My only complaint is that I can only find Lauren Haney's books in paperback. I'd love to have her books in Hardcover!

Water Baby: A First Fun Book of Water Skills
Published in Hardcover by Harper Collins - UK (September, 1999)
Authors: Lauren Heston and Zena Holloway
Average review score:

Book is more suited for infants - not toddlers
I loved the book to look at, but it was clear from the start that my son - who is nearly two - was already too old. I'm going to use it as a guide, somewhat, but wish I would have had it when he was still an infant. At 22 months he is relatively adept in the water anyway and at the same time old enough to have some typical water apprehension.

The exercises are also not real appropriate for a toddler because they are just too wiggly. When he weighed less than 20 pounds it would have been much more feasible to do the steps but now at a strong 30 pounds and a mind of his own this isn't the best book for us.

However, I intend to get this book for new moms. What a great shower gift!

Great Pictures!
I loved the book. Pictures are great and have really good tips. My 25 months old baby is already swimming by himself!. I bought a second copy for a friend.

Great!
Took a risk and bought this book before there were any reviews here. The book is great; very high quality. I was worried that it was only 48 pages... but they are 48 very well executed pages with amazing photographs and clear descriptions of the 9 month long water baby program.

I am a Canadian living in Chile, and bringing a baby to the pool shocked the very conservative Chileans. But when they saw the pictures in the book, and my 2 month old son swimming underwater, suddenly all the babies in our condo were in the pool.

Everything You Have Is Mine (Lauren Laurano Mystery)
Published in Hardcover by Little Brown & Company (April, 1991)
Author: Sandra Scoppettone
Average review score:

A good mystery
It's always a gamble to pick up a book by a new (to you) author. This is especially true with lesbian mysteries as I have found that there are alot of hits and misses in this genre. All in all I found this first installment of the Lauren Laurano mystery series to be enjoyable.

Lauren's life and her relationship with her partner, Kip, is disrupted when Lauren finds herself obsessed with a new case. Venturing for the first time into cyberspace (an interesting look back at the infancy of the internet) while searching for Lake's rapist and following up leads even when the individuals who employed her are the main suspects Lauren won't stop until she gets answers to the questions that are nagging her.

Besides the outdated technology, Scoppettone spends too much time describing the fashions worn by each character. In addition her descriptions of how long time passes ("two months later the elevator arrived") can get annoying after two or three references. I must admit that these are small flaws I found in this book and I will still continue reading the remainder of the books in this series.

Excellent; highly recommended
I discovered this book when it was very favorably reviewed in the Sunday New York Times. The reviewer described it as the first mainstream mystery featuring a lesbian which would appeal to everyone (regardless of sexual preference). Since it took place in Greenwich Village (where my office was temporarily located at the time), and I guess I was a little curious about the lesbian lifestyle, I bought it.

It was excellent. Despite having always considered myself very thoughtful and broadminded, I was surprised at how many problems gays face that would never have occurred to me.

I also loved the Village setting. My office was temporarily located there at the time, and the book mentioned sites which had hitherto confused me (e.g., a large unmarked building which always had people coming and going turned out to be the Gay and Lesbian Center).

In short, apart from the mystery, it provided an excellent glimpse into a very different world. I highly recommend it.

wonderful book, bad translation!
When I read the first adventure of Lauren (in the french version, because I am french) I was very enthusiastic...I love books where you feel envolved, and when you cannot stop reading (sorry for my english!). So I decide to buy the second one in Italy, where I leave. They sell me the 4th one telling me that it was the second (that what the review on the book says!). This is the worst thing that they could do! I have to say that also the translation is AWFUL! No sense sentence, grammar errors.... So I bought the 2 intermediate books (can you imagine that?) in french. The translation is better than the italian one, but still have some errors. Isn't possible to find a good translator, or a good spelling checker? I think I will buy the fifth one in english, even if it is a harder job for me to read in english...At least I hope to read what Scoppettone writes! How can I write an email to the writer?

Lily
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Signet (01 April, 2003)
Author: Lauren Royal
Average review score:

warm historical romance
In 1673, after sixteen-year-old Lily Ashcroft meets aristocratic scholar Randal Nesbit she challenges the family motto of "Question Convention". Lily realizes she has found her life mate and wants a very conventional marriage to the decade older Randal. He is extremely attracted to Lily but he keeps reminding himself she is only sixteen. In fact he uses that rationalization for the next four years to keep his distance.

However, Rand sees Lily during a Baptism of her twin nephew and niece and he knows he no longer can hide behind her under age status, nor does he want too. He simply desires marriage to his beloved Lily. However, she concludes that her sister Rose has set her sights on Rand and Lily decides to sacrifice her own happiness for her family. However, neither sibling understands that to Rand a Rose is not a Rose as his preference run towards a different flower.

LILY, the second bloom in Lauren Royal's seventeenth century romantic bouquet (see VIOLET) is an enjoyable tale starring two nice people who (with Rose) make an interesting triangle. The story line is entertaining, but no character is deeply developed and the conflict is not that powerful. Still, readers will enjoy a warm historical romance starring charming protagonists who want no one hurt.

Harriet Klausner

Budding Bestseller!
In this, the second chapter of the Ashcroft sisters' story, it's Lily's turn to bloom. Sweet and self-sacrificing, Lily lets her sister Rose draw her into a promise to help her win the dashing Lord Randal Nesbitt for a husband. But Lily's selflessness is tested sorely when she discovers that not only is she enchanted by the scholarly lord herself, but he, too, is beguiled by Lily's unconventional spirit. From the moment they kiss, their destiny seems certain. Lily fears she cannot keep her vow to Rose, and for the first time in his life, the confirmed bachelor Rand considers marriage. But when a sudden death and a secret promise threaten to destroy their newfound love, Lily and Rand realize they must join, heart and mind, to resolve the past and create a place for their romance to blossom.

LILY is another engaging episode of the charming and offbeat Ashcroft family, set amongst the intellectual splendor of the Restoration period. The characters are delightful, the story riveting, and the descriptions rich with historical detail. Lauren deftly weaves humor, drama, warmth, and passion into a sensual tapestry that will leave readers with a sigh of satisfaction, a thirst for more Ashcroft stories, and a curious craving for champagne ...

Lilly Sparkles
I love Lauren Royal's books. She makes Lilly come to life. Royal's use of historical details are written into the story as part of the story. I like that. Lilly is adorable as is Rand. I can't wait for Rose's story.
